Two-Time Champion, Perennial League All-Star Returns
September 20, 2019 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Moncton Magic News Release
(Moncton, NB.) The defending NBL Canada Champion Moncton Magic have re-signed another player from last years team, and this one may be the biggest yet. Two-time NBL Canada Champion Billy White has signed with the team and will back at the Avenir Centre for the 2019-2020 season.
White, a 6'9" Power Forward from Las Vegas, Nevada came to terms with the team early last week. This will be White's fifth season in the NBL Canada, having made an appearance in the league finals each of his first 4 seasons, a stat Head Coach and General Manager of Player Operations Joe Salerno says shouldn't go unnoticed.
"Billy has proven time and time again he is a winner. It is no easy task, going to four straight finals. He is the only player in League history who has done such a thing. He is a winner, and his history in our league, and anywhere else he has ever played shows that" commented Salerno.
White was a juggernaut in the Magic's front court all season in 2018-19. He led the Magic in multiple statistical categories including, points per game, Field Goal percentage, and free throw attempts. A dominant inside scoring threat, who has the ability to put the ball on the floor, and finish in traffic, his versatility makes him one of the most sought-after talents in the league. The perennial league All-Star averaged 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and just shy of 4 assists per game last season, on his way to his 2ndLeague Championship.
White was part of a blockbuster trade in the summer of 2018, which sent former Magic star Terry Thomas to the Halifax Hurricanes, in return for the rights to White. The trade panned out for the Magic, as White helped lead the team to a franchise high 38-16 record and overcoming his former team the Hurricanes in an epic 7 game Atlantic Division finals.
"We made that move last summer for one reason, to bring in Billy and help us win a Championship here in Moncton, and he did just that" noted Salerno. "He is arguably the best power forward this league has ever seen, and he has proven that year after year. Re-signing Billy was really one of the final big pieces to the puzzle for us this off-season, and I am glad we were able to get a deal done."
The former San Diego State Aztec says he is looking forward to coming back and playing his second season with the Magic, and like many others in the Hub City, he has his sights set on one thing, a repeat performance.
"I really am excited to be back for another year to defend our Championship. I want to bring another title to Moncton, plain and simple" stated White.
White marks the seventh returnee from last years team that was dominant at home going an impressive 24-4 at the Avenir Centre. He will join Corey Allmond, Jason Calliste, Denzell Taylor, Wayne McCullough and Marcus Lewis as the core group back for a second season. Newcomers Jeremiah Mordi, Dinjiyl Walker and Brandon Neel have also signed with the team.
