Toronto Lynx News Release

(TORONTO, ON) – The 2004 A-League season is in full swing as the Lynx continue their 4-game road trip this week with stops in Richmond and Virginia Beach. After opening the season with a victory over the expansion Puerto Rico Islanders, the Lynx dropped their first match of the year on Saturday in Rochester to fall to 1-1-0 on the season. The club will look to bounce back on Thursday, May 6 when they visit the Richmond Kickers for a 7:00pm kickoff. The Kickers stand at 1-1-2 this season and are coming off their first win of the season on Saturday in Virginia Beach. After reaching the A-League Championship game in 2002, the Kickers missed the playoffs last season for the first time in their A-League history. Striker, Kevin Jeffery, who recorded 10 goals last season and has scored once in 4 games thus far in 2004, will lead the Kickers once again this season.

Following Thursday's match, the Lynx will move on to face the Virginia Beach Mariners on Saturday, May 8th with a 7:30pm kickoff. The Mariners high-powered offense led the club to the playoffs last season. The offense looks to remain intact with striker, Dante Washington, who finished 3rd in the A-League in points and scored 18 goals in 2003 and 1st Team A-League All-Star midfielder, Roland Vargas-Aguilera who scored 10 goals and added 9 assists leading the charge. The Mariners are looking for their first win of the season after opening 0-1-1 in two matches versus archrival Richmond last week.

"A road trip is the best thing for this team," remarked Lynx head coach, Duncan Wilde. "It will give us a chance for some team building. There has been a positive spirit and a lot of hard work at training this week. If the players can show the quality that they have demonstrated in training during game situations, we have the makings of a very good squad this season." For the first time this season, the Lynx are healthy and Wilde will be able to start his preferred lineup. The Rochester match featured A-League debuts for three Lynx players: Igor Prostran, Aaron Steele and the newest member of the roster, former Chelsea player, Darren Baxter. An optimistic Wilde continues, "There were some positives to take out of the Rochester match last weekend. We had 3 players make their A-League debuts and were only down 2-0 with 10 minutes to play. When Joe Mattacchione hit the post, we could have been right back in the game, but it wasn't to be. With our team finally healthy, we fully intend to chase the six points on this road trip and set ourselves up for the home opener rematch with Rochester on Sunday May 16th."
