Two Ex-NBA Players Signed by Sound
October 23, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Strong Island Sound News Release
Patchogue, NY- The Strong Island Sound have announced that they have signed center Gordon Malone and guard Charles Jones for the 2007-08 ABA season. Jones briefly played with the Sound in their inaugural 2005-06 season.
The 6'11" Malone was drafted in the 2nd round (44th overall) of the 1997 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. In two years at the University of West Virginia, he averaged 10.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
Gordon has also played in the ABA, CBA, USBL, IBA, EBA, MBA and EBA, as well as overseas in Puerto Rico, Poland, Argentina, Greece, Dominican Republic and China. Gordon was also a member of the Harlem Globetrotters on two separate occasions in 2005 and 2006.
Being a two-time NCAA scoring champion is no small task, and when Jones suited up for L.I.U. (Brooklyn), he was destined for greatness. He led the nation with a 30.1 PPG average during the 1996-97 season, and followed that up with 28.4 PPG a year later.
He went undrafted in the 1998 NBA Draft and was signed by the Chicago Bulls as a free agent, where he averaged 3.7 points in 23 games. The following season, Jones played 56 games for the Los Angeles Clippers and averaged 3.4 PPG.
Jones played three games with Strong Island in November of 2005 and won ABA Player of the Week for his 21 point, 12 assist and 10 rebound effort in a 123-112 win at Rochester. It was the organization's first victory and it came against the eventual league champion.
His experiences overseas include Greece, Italy, Israel, Argentina, Bulgaria and Bolivia. Stateside, he has participated in the EBA, USBL and CBA.
The Sound begin the 2007-08 season with a road game against the Westchester Phantoms on November 4 and are holding their home opener on November 11 at 7:15 p.m. versus the First State (Delaware) Fusion at Suffolk Community College in Selden. Tickets are available at the door or by visiting www.strongislandsound.com. Discounted season ticket packages are also available.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
