Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I.- The University of Louisville will send two Cardinals to Newport as LHP Gavin Sullivan and catcher Zach Britton have both signed with the Gulls for the 2018 season.

Sullivan's arrival brings in another left-handed arm to help bolster the pitching staff for Newport this season. The Louisville, Ky. native graduated from Eastern High School in 2017. Through two appearances this season, the six-one, 195-pound lefty has yet to give up a run while walking just one batter. Sullivan's fastball has been clocked in the upper 80s with a changeup and curveball around 70 MPH.

During his time at Eastern the southpaw was a three-year letter winner and a member of the 2017 All-State team. As a senior, Sullivan recorded a 2.52 ERA with 100 strikeouts in 58.1 innings pitched. Perfect Game ranked him the No. 1 lefty as well as the No. 12 overall player in the state of Kentucky. He was also named a 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American.

Sullivan will be joined by the six-foot-one, 195 freshman catcher Zach Britton, who hails from Batesville, Ind. Britton committed to Louisville after his freshman year of high school when he hit .459 with 20 RBI, 12 doubles, and two home runs. Britton currently holds onto a .243 AVG including six RBI. His best game came against Morehead State where he was three-for-three with a double, a home run, and two RBI.

Before joining the Cardinals, Britton was a four-year letter winner at Batesville High School. In his senior year, he finished with a .553 batting average with six home runs, 16 doubles, 27 RBI, and 41 runs scored. As a result, Britton was named the 2017 District Player of the Year as well as a member of the All-Midwest Region team. Perfect Game ranked him the No. 4 player and No.1 catcher in Indiana. His senior campaign also earned him 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American. This past summer the Louisville catcher played for Indiana Bulls Baseball.

The Cardinals currently stand at 17- 6 and are 15th in the NCAA Division I rankings. Sullivan and Britton will face off against several other Gulls throughout the 2018 collegiate season including a three-game series versus Virginia Tech starting on April 14.
