Atlanta Beat News Release

ATLANTA (May 6, 2003) - Atlanta Beat forward Cindy Parlow and goalkeeper Briana Scurry were today named to the 24-player U.S. Women's National Team roster that will begin training on May 12, in preparation for the May 17 match versus England. The match versus England will be played at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday, May 17 at 12 p.m. CT and will be televised live on ESPN. Head Coach April Heinrichs will select 18 players from the 24-player roster to face the English Women's National Team on May 17.

This is the second call-up within a month for Parlow and Scurry, who both played 90 minutes in the U.S. Women's 6-1 win over Canada on April 26, at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. The Atlanta Beat was on the road on April 26, facing the Washington Freedom. While Parlow did not suit up for the Beat's contest versus the Freedom, Scurry played the full 90 minutes immediately following the U.S. match and earned a 1-1 tie.

The national team camp and match versus England are important tune-ups for the U.S. women, who will defend their World Cup title in the fall of 2003. Parlow and Scurry, who were both part of the 1999 Women's World Cup Championship team, are looking to again be included on the team that will represent the U.S. in the World Cup this fall. After facing England on May 17, the U.S. women will face Ireland in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 14 at 9 p.m. ET. and Brazil in New Orleans, La., on July 13 at 4 p.m. ET.

The Atlanta Beat is coming off its first loss of the season, a 1-0 decision to the San Jose CyberRays on Saturday, May 3. The Beat will face the San Diego Spirit this Saturday, May 10, in the first of three regular season meetings. The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Herndon Stadium in downtown Atlanta.
