May 6, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
San Diego Spirit News Release
SAN DIEGO - Defender Joy Fawcett, midfielders Aly Wagner and Julie Foudy and forward Shannon MacMillan have been named to the 24-player U.S. Women's National Team roster that will train for four days in Birmingham, Alabama, in preparation to face England on May 17 at Legion Field in a match that will be televised live on ESPN at 10 a.m. PT.
The four Spirit players will continue their quest to earn a spot on the U.S. 2003 Women's World Cup roster for the tournament that was recently moved from China and possibly will be held in the United States.
Fawcett, who was recently named by U.S. head coach April Heinrichs as co-captain of the U.S. Women's National Team along with Spirit captain Julie Foudy, has played 212 times for the United States. Foudy has been the sole captain of the USA since the retirement of Carla Overbeck in 2000. Foudy will still wear the captain's armband when both are in the lineup, but both will share the leadership duties with the U.S. team. Fawcett captained the USA at the Four Nations Tournament in China in January when Foudy was not on the roster. Foudy has played 226 times for the USA.
MacMillan, coming off a historic four-goal performance against Canada in the USA's 6-1 victory on April 26 at RFK Stadium, now has 58 career international goals to go with her 153 caps. She has moved into fifth place on both the USA's all-time goals list and all-time points list (161).
Wagner has played 42 times for the USA and is second on the U.S. team in scoring this year (behind MacMillan) with two goals and six assists. With a Noon CT kickoff in Birmingham, the players will travel back to San Diego that night and be available to play against the Boston Breakers on Sunday, May 18 with the kickoff at 5 p.m. PT.
