Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas (Thursday, January 15, 2014) - The Austin Aztex saw two of their former players drafted by MLS teams Thursday afternoon, led by second overall pick Khiry Shelton, who was drafted by expansion franchise NYC FC.
Joining Shelton in MLS is former Aztex Dan Metzger (42nd, D.C. United). The two players give the Aztex a total of 10 players from the three previous seasons who have heard their names selected during the MLS SuperDraft.
Shelton, a 6'3" forward from Leander, enjoyed a dominant senior campaign at Oregon State in which he scored 10 goals and added 12 assists. Shelton was named Pac-12 Player of the Year and finalist for the Mac Hermann trophy, the top award for collegiate soccer players. Shelton played for the Austin Aztex PDL squad in 2012 and 2013, and scored 7 goals and 3 assists in only 11 games played.
With the second overall pick, Shelton is now the highest pick for a former Austin Aztex player, beating out Kekuta Manneh, who was drafted fourth overall to the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2013.
Metzger, a 5'9" midfielder from the University of Maryland, established himself as a physical midfielder and made five appearances for the Aztex.
The Aztex kick off their preseason versus Major League Soccer's D.C. United in the ATX Pro Challenge, a four-team tournament featuring MLS squads D.C. United, Columbus Crew SC, and FC Dallas. For more information on the ATX Pro Challenge, visit www.austinaztex.com/atxprochallenge.
