Twisters Snakebitten at Home

May 8, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2)
Arkansas Diamonds News Release

The Arkansas Twisters fell behind early against one of the best teams in af2, but had the heart to fight back and stay in the game. But in the end it was Tennessee Valley that left Alltel Arena with a 53-36 win. The final doesn't indicate how close the score was.

Tennessee Valley (4-1) got on the board first when Josh Kellett hit Ronny Daniels for a 23 yard touchdown score and the Vipers led 7-0 after the extra point. Arkansas answered when Kevin Williams hit Lennie Johnson on a slant for an 18 yard score and the game was tied at 7. Tennessee Valley scored at the end of the first quarter on a Kellett quarterback keeper, but Alex Walls missed the extra point to leave the scored 13-7 at the end of one quarter.

Arkansas (1-4) answered again by driving down the field and finishing when Darnell Small ran for a three yard touchdown. New kicker Mark Gill missed the extra point and the score was tied at 13. Tennessee Valley looked like they were beginning to pull away when the Vipers connected for a 26-13 lead. But Arkanas closed the gap before halftime when Kevin Williams hit Prince Williams for a short td pass to go to the locker room down 26-20 at halftime.

The Vipers extended their lead to begin the second half when Marquis Floyd ran for a short touchdown to put Tennessee Valley up 33-20. That began a see-saw, back and forth scoring affair between the two teams. Both teams would answer each other's score four times, seeing Arkansas pull within six points twice. But Tennessee Valley put the nail in the coffin on Arkansas' comeback hopes when Kellett found Daniels for the fifth time and Tennessee Valley finished by winning 53-36.

Kellett finished with seven total touchdowns, six passing, and Daniels had five receiving touchdowns to earn Offensive Player of the Game Honors. Kevin Williams, back at quarterback after playing offensive specialist last week, finished with three touchdown passes, and Ted Alford finished with a touchdown receiving and a 56 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Prince Williams and Johnson each had receiving touchdowns and Darnell Small had one rushing. Newly signed defensive specialist Norman Mason had two interceptions to earn Defensive Player of the Game honors for Arkansas.

The Twisters face rival Memphis next week on the road.
