Austin Turfcats News Release
Austin, TX - The Austin Turfcats have blown the Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) championship race wide open, battling to a 35-27 halftime lead and continuing in the second half to post a 56-53 win at Adfirmative.com Field at the Travis County Expo Center.
The Swashbucklers came into tonight's game carrying a 20-game winning streak, as well as their back-to-back championships in the Intense Football League (IFL) in 2007 and 2008. The Turfcats, in their inaugural season, sought their second win in team history and their first home win.
Defense ruled the first quarter, as neither team was able to score. The Swashbucklers began the 2nd Quarter with a bang, scoring a 5-yard touchdown pass from Freddie Harrison to Marcus Wilridge with only four seconds off of the clock. The offenses continued to ratchet up the scoreboard, scoring a combined 62 points during the 2nd quarter alone. As the buzzer sounded to end the first half, the Swashbucklers' Tommy Hebert made a 21-yard field goal to cut the Turfcats' lead to 35-27.
The Swashbucklers would come out of the locker room with a desire to even the score; a 33-yard pass from Alvin Bartie to Henry Hunter cut the 'Cats lead to 35-34 following a Tommy Hebert kick. After trading a pair of touchdowns to bring the score to 42-40 (following a Swashbucklers missed PAT), the Turfcats expanded the lead to 49-40 following a 25-yard touchdown pass from Ellis to Reggie Smith at the end of the 3rd quarter.
The Turfcats defense buckled down in the 4th quarter, preventing Louisiana from scoring until almost the 3-minute mark. The Turfcats offense, meanwhile, rolled off a 12-yard touchdown pass from Ellis to Darrick Wallace, bringing the score to 56-46 with 3:12 remaining in the game. The Swashbucklers added one more touchdown, but missed a crucial 2-point conversion and allowed the Turfcats to run out the clock and preserve the victory, by a final score of 56-53.
Vice-President/General Manager Ronald Oswalt said following the win, "Even though this was only our third game, I believe the indoor football world is looking at a possible changing of the guard."
Turfcats Head Coach Chris Duliban commented postgame, "We came to play tonight. Our guys believe in our system and we played a complete, 60-minute game for the first time this season. There is much more I expect from this team in 2009."
