Turfcats Secure Second Place With Win Over Mudbugs

Lafayette, La - The Austin Turfcats (7-2) overcome a bus breakdown, seven lead changes, and a halftime deficit to become the undisputed second place team in the SIFL. Keith Clay had six touchdowns and Gary Cooper threw for 82 yards to lead the Turfcats to a 50-40 victory over the third place Acadiana Mudbugs (5-4).

The first half got under way with Darrick Wallace returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. The Mudbugs answered right away with a rushing touchdown and a 25 yards passing touchdown but missed a point after to finish the quarter with a score of 13-7 in favor of the Mudbugs.

On their first possession of the second quarter Keith Clay had a five-yard rush and then finished the drive with a one-yard rushing touchdowns to put the Turfcats up by one point. The Mudbugs regained the lead with a rushing touchdown but once again missed the point after. The scoring pattern continued when the Turfcats' quarterback Deron Ellis rushed in for a touchdown and then Mudbugs returned the missed extra point for a touchdown to the end the half Mudbugs 25, Turfcats 21.

The second half got underway with the Mudbugs scoring a touchdown and the Turfcats getting a holding call in the end zone giving them a safety. Clay scored on the next possession to bring the score to 32-30 going into the fourth quarter.

The Turfcats started the fourth quarter on fire when Deron Ellis blocked a field goal, Metrick McHenry recovered it then lateralled the ball to Michael Catchings who lateralled it to Wallace who ran it the rest of the way for the touchdown. Feeling the pressure of the Turfcats taking the lead, the Mudbugs brought in recently injured quarterback Bo Bartik. On his second series Bartik threw for a touchdown regaining the lead for the Mudbugs 40-37. That would be the Mudbugs' last score of the night but the Turfcats would regain the lead with a Clay touchdown and then extend the lead to ten with a Cooper to Robert Quiroga 46-yard touchdown pass. This ended the game with the Turfcats on top 50-40.

"With the seven lead changes and the double lateral to change the game, in my four years in indoor football this was the best game I have ever been a part of," said Turfcats Vice President/General Manager Ronald Oswalt.

Cooper finished the game with six of 13 for 82 yards passing, 15 yards rushing and one touchdown. Clay had three touchdowns while Quiroga had five catches for 85 yards and one touchdown.

The Turfcats' next game is against the Texas Hurricanes on July 7 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be held at the Arctic Wolf Ice Center in College Station and tickets will be available at the box office on game day.
