LAFAYETTE, La. (June 29, 2009) - Keith Clay's 11-yard run with 3:17 remaining put Austin ahead for good as the Turfcats defeated the Acadiana Mudbugs 50-40 in a key Southern Indoor Football League game Monday night.
Interceptions by Shon Mitchell and Metrick McHenry along with Robert Quiroga's 46-yard touchdown pass from Gary Cooper helped the Turfcats (7-2) take a two-game lead over the Mudbugs (5-4) for second place in the SIFL standing and the right to host a playoff game the week of July 17-20.
There were seven lead changes. The Mudbugs' last lead was at 40-37 with four minutes remaining.
SWASHBUCKLERS 78, HURRICANES 26
LAKE CHARLES, La. (June 29, 2009) - Alvin Bartie and Freddie Harrison each threw four touchdown passes as the Louisiana Swashbucklers pulled away from a 22-20 third quarter lead and defeated the Texas Hurricanes 78-26 in a Southern Indoor Football League game Monday night.
The Swashbucklers (9-1) clinched home field advantage for the first round of the SIFL playoffs the week of July 17-20 by scoring 56 second-half-points.
Texas (1-6) closed to 22-20 on Damon Richard's 20-yard interception with 13:42 remaining in the third quarter.
Bartie, who also rushed for two touchdowns, made it 29-20 on a 1-yard run two minutes later, then interceptions by Phillip O'Neal and Damien Huren helped spark the 35-0 scoring run that gave Louisiana a 57-20 lead.
Bartie finished 12 of 22 for 174 yards. All four of Harrison's fourth-quarter completions were for touchdowns.
Marcus Wilridge (7 catches for 119 yards) caught three touchdown passes, while Henry Hunter (7-60) had two. Raymond Harris rushed for one score and caught another.
Michael Bishop, the 1998 Heisman Trophy runner-up, had 141 yards and two touchdown passes to Jarrod Fuller (8-77) for the Hurricanes.
CONQUERORS 66, BAYOU BULLS 0
HOUMA, La. (June 27, 2009) -- Michael Burks scored two touchdowns and Omar Haugabook threw for two as the Houma Conquerors defeated the Lafayette Bayou Bulls 66-0 in a Southern Indoor Football League game Saturday.
The Bayou Bulls were a replacement team for the North Texas Crunch, the SIFL's travel team for 2009. Last-minute transportation issues prevented the Crunch from traveling to Houma.
Haugabook's touchdown passes to Gerald White and Floyd Landry helped Houma turn a 7-0 lead into 28-0 at halftime.
