Turfcats Prepare For Potential 290 Rivalry
May 20, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Austin Turfcats News Release
Austin, TX - Just three hours away in Houston, the Texas Pirates prepare for the first game of the Turfcats versus Texas in-state rivalry. In the first game of a four game season series the Turfcats are looking to add to their three game win streak and improve their record to 5-1 with a win over the 1-2 Texas Pirates.
All sports fans, and especially Texans, love a good rivalry. Just look at the Longhorns and Aggies. One of the most heated rivalries in college football. With only 165 miles and highway 290 separating these two professional teams, this match-up between the Pirates and Turfcats has potential to be the great rivalry of the SIFL.
The Turfcats are coming off of a near 30 point win over the Houma Conquerors last Saturday night that tied them for first place in the league. The team also moved up from number three to number two in the Massey Ratings this week. The first half saw scores by Ray Hall with a 9-yard touchdown run, Darrick Wallace with a 50-yard missed field goal return, quarterback Deron Ellis with a touchdown run, and Michael Catchings with a returned interception. The half ended with a score of 26-6 in the Turfcats favor.
During the second half, the Turfcats continued to prove that they had a full arsenal of scoring weapons. Ellis had another rushing touchdown, this time for 35 yards, and Wallace and another missed field goal return for a touchdown. Robert Quiroga, caught at 12-yard touchdown pass, David Banks scored on a 6-yard run and Kevin Earvine added six with a reception. The Turfcats came out on top with a final score of 55-27.
With the Pirates' announcement of Troy Esprit as their head coach, it's a reunion of sorts for Turfcats Vice President/General Manager Ronald Oswalt and Esprit. They worked together at the Katy Copperheads of the National Indoor Football League and the Texas Copperheads of the af2. "From my experiences with Troy I know they will have a much better product on and off the field than before," said Oswalt.
