
Turfcats defeat Crunch

AUSTIN, Texas - The North Texas Crunch (5-1) made their debut in the Southern Indoor Football League Saturday night, but the Austin Turfcats (5-1) showed them exactly why they're a top contender in the league. The Turfcats beat the Crunch 71-15.
The first quarter got underway with a string of turnovers as both teams traded fumbles to start the half. The next Crunch possession then ended when Michael Rutledge intercepted a pass from quarterback James Wilson. The Turfcats were able to take advantage of this turnover when Robert Quiroga caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Deron Ellis. The quarter ended with a Turfcats 6-0 lead.
Keith Clay made up for his earlier fumble by scoring right away in the second quarter capping off a 6-play drive with a touchdown. On the next possession the Crunch attempted to continue a 7-play drive by converting on fourth and one but Barrett Dallmeyer sacked Wilson for a loss of 8 yards. It took the Turfcats only two plays to score on their next drive when Ellis rushed into the end zone but the point after was blocked by Alan Stavinoha. Ricky Madison put the Crunch on the board with a 5-yard rushing touchdown.
The second quarter scoring continued on the Turfcats next possession. Darrick Wallace put the offense in good position with a 36-yard kickoff return and Darren Brown put three on the scoreboard with a 24-yard field goal. JR Turner put an end to the Crunch's next drive when he recovered a Wilson fumble. Ellis turned this fumble recovery into a 4-yard rushing touchdown.. The Crunch got the last score of the half with a John Bryant 33-yard field goal ending the half with a 29-9 Turfcats lead.
The second half started with another long kickoff return for Wallace. After his 42-yard return, it took the Turfcats only three plays to get Clay rushing into the end zone. Turfcats then scored on the Crunch's next possession when Barrett Dallmeyer sacked Wilson for a safety. The Turfcats then added a pair of touchdowns with receptions by Quiroga and Wallace. Benford had another fumble recovery leading to a Tim Cook rushing touchdown. After Wallace returned a missed field goal 50 yards for a touchdown, the quarter ended with the Turfcats on top 64-9.
The Crunch got on the board first in the fourth quarter with a reception by Guy Fernandez. The last score of the night came when Nick Lewis caught a 10-yard pass from Ellis ending the game with a score of 71-15.
The Turfcats hit the road for their next game June 15, in Lake Charles, La. They'll take on the first place Swashbucklers.
