Austin Turfcats News Release

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Austin Turfcats (9-2) closed out their regular season schedule with a 60-28 win over the Texas Hurricanes (1-9) Saturday night in College Station.

The Turfcats started the game with a touchdown on their first possession when Keith Clay rushed for seven yards and Reggie Smith rushed for the two-point conversion. Texas answered right away but so did Austin with Smith rushing for eight yards and the touchdown giving them a 14-6 lead. Texas closed the gap but it took the Turfcats only two plays to get Clay into the endzone again with Darrick Wallace adding the two extra points giving the Turfcats a 22-14 lead after the first quarter.

Turfcats running back Ray Hall rushed for a touchdown on their first possession on the second quarter. The teams then traded touchdowns with Smith catching the touchdown reception. After a string of turnovers, Wallace had a receiving touchdown to put the Turfcats up 40-22 at the half.

The Turfcats scored on their first possession of the second half with quarterback Gary Cooper finding Robert Quiroga in the endzone. The Hurricanes answered with a touchdown but it would be their last score of the game. The Turfcats went on to score twice more with receiving touchdowns to Quiroga and Wallace and Smith adding a two-point conversion for the final score of 60-28.

Cooper finished with 86 total yards and three touchdowns, Deron Ellis had 24 yards passing and one touchdown, and Clay, Quiroga, Smith, and Wallace had two touchdowns each. The Turfcats set a new SIFL record with 147 single game rushing yards. This eclipsed the previous record held by the Turfcats of 122 yards in their season opener on April 18 against the Acadiana Mudbugs. This also marked the second game where the Turfcats have scored 60 or more points on the road this season. The Turfcats will host a first round playoff game on July 18 against the Acadiana Mudugs (6-5) at the Adfirmative.com Field at the Travis County Expo Center. Tickets go on sale to season ticket holders on July 13 and to the general public on July 14. Gates and the ticket booth open at 2:30 p.m., doors open at 5:30 and kickoff is at 6:30.
