SIFL Week 13 Recaps: Houma Earns 4th Seed

After a disastrous 0-5 start, the Houma Conquerors are now are a playoff team.

A 41-28 victory over the Acadiana Mudbugs combined with the Texas Hurricanes' 60-28 loss to the Austin Turfcats lifted the Conquerors into the final Southern Indoor Football League playoff spot.

Houma (3-8) will meet the Louisiana Swashbucklers (10-1) on Monday, July 20. Austin (9-2) hosts Acadiana (6-5) on Saturday, July 18.

Winless and ineffective under Franklin Thomas, the Conquerors have played .500 ball under interim coach C.J. Maiden.

``This feels great,'' Maiden said. ``I'm very excited and very proud of the players. The city and team rallied around us as coaches and players. I tried to keep my mind and the players' mind on the field.''

Omar Haugabook rushed for three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with five minutes remaining.

Sebryon Burks' interception helped the Conquerors (3-8) preserve the victory.

Michael Burks rushed for two touchdowns, including the insurance touchdown after Burks' interception.

Haugabook rushed for 53 yards on seven carries and completed 12 of 16 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Chandler Roberson scored two touchdowns for the Mudbugs in a game that saw five lead changes.

TURFCATS 60, HURRICANES 28

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (July 11, 2009) -- Darrick Wallace caught three touchdown passes, and Keith Clay and Reggie Smith each scored twice as the Austin Turfcats defeated the Texas Hurricanes 60-28 Saturday night in the regular season finale for both teams.

Austin (9-2) defeated Texas (1-9) for the fourth time this season.

The Turfcats pulled away from a 14-14 tie with an 11-yard Clay run and a 3-yarder by Ray Hall with 13:13 left in the second period. Texas closed to 28-22 on Roland Hayes' 1-yard run with 11:02 left in the half, but the Turfcats scored the next 18 points to take control.

Wallace finished with four catches for 66 yards. Clay gained 44 yards on nine carries. Gary Cooper completed just five passes, but three went for touchdowns. Cooper also rushed for a score.

David Bowie threw two touchdowns to Joe Townsend and rushed for another for the Hurricanes, who played three home games in the past seven days.
