TUPELO, MS--The Tupelo FireAnts defeated the Houma Bayou Bucks 58-50 in Head Coach Bobby Hall's indoor football debut.
The Tupelo FireAnts opened their 2004 season with a thrilling 58-50 victory over the Houma Bayou Bucks tonight in front of 3,104 fans at the BancorpSouth Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. The game marked the indoor football debut of much-heralded Head Coach Bobby Hall.
The FireAnts were led on offense by Will Hall, who completed 9 of 17 passes for 128 yards, with 2 touchdowns and an interception. Chris Rainey also threw for a touchdown as he heaved the ball 33 yards David Mooneyham in his only pass of the night. Rico McDonald and Joe Gunn split time at half-back as McDonald rushed 10 times for 54 yards and a touchdown while Gunn rumbled 13 times for 53 yards and 2 scores. David Mooneyham hauled in 4 receptions for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns. Chris Rainey had 3 receptions for 29 yards while Darryl Carter nabbed 2 passes for 11 yards and a touchdown. Bobby Hill had an impressive contest, returning 3 kicks for 87 yards. Hill also grabbed a crucial interception late in the fourth quarter. On defense, Pig Prather lead the team with 13 tackles, while Kareem Vance had a close 12. Tupelo totaled 140 yards rushing and 161 yards passing for a total of 301 yards, with 15 first downs and 2 penalties for 28 yards.
The Bayou Bucks were led on offense by running back Jarvis Dunn, who ran the ball 17 times for a game-high 102 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Doug Coleman completed 15 of 27 passes for 175 yards with a whopping 5 touchdowns and an interception. Aubrey Jones also contributed at quarterback, completing 4 of 6 passes for 76 yards. Clint Schexnayder and Kevin Heard each had 6 receptions, as Schexnayder tallied 80 yards and a touchdown while Heard amassed 66 yards with 2 touchdowns. Darian Chestnut hauled in 5 catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. Devon Lockett also scored on a reception of 23 yards. Sullivan Heard returned 8 kicks for a total of 145 yards and a touchdown. Rogers Thalamus grabbed one interception. On defense, Timothy Betts lead the team with 10 tackles, while David Dorsey had 8. Houma totaled 94 yards rushing and 251 yards passing for a total of 345 yards of offense, with 24 first downs and 5 penalties for 35 yards.
Tupelo's record improves to 1-0, while Houma's record drops to 0-1.
