Tulsa Talons News Release
TULSA - On Thursday, November 3, 2005 Tulsa Talons QB Ben Bowling showed his reading skills with Jenks West Intermediate 5th grade Readers Theatre students. Readers Theatre is an after school reading program. Bowling spoke to 50 students about the importance of reading and what an impact school has done on his life. One student said, "After High School I am going straight to the NFL!" Bowling replied, "That is awesome because having goals and dreams is the first step. The second step is to have a back-up plan just incase you were to get injured. After High School most of us football players go onto college to learn football skills at a higher level. To play college football you will need to have reading skills to pass your classes to be eligible to play. Therefore, keep on reading and you will go much farther in life." Bowling got up in front of the students and read a poem by Gary Soto called, "How Coach Told Me I Didn't Make the Cut." Currently, the students are reading Charlotte's Web. Once Bowling was done with his poem all the students broke up into groups and practiced scenes from Charlotte's Web and later performed on stage. In the end, Bowling left them with autographed posters, group photos and smiles on their faces.
