Tulsa 66ers News Release
TULSA, Okla., June 5, 2006 - The Tulsa 66ers dancers and front office staff will participate in the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma's "Volunteer-A-Thon" on June 6 at the new Food Bank, located at 1304 N. Kenosha Avenue. The 66ers will be sorting and repackaging donated grocery items for hungry citizens of the Eastern Oklahoma area.
"We love to be in the community. Helping Oklahoma is our first priority, basketball is second," said Tulsa 66ers team president Joe Berry. "We are proud to assist those who need it - children and families right here in our community."
On June 6, communities across the country will remember more than 38 million Americans suffering from hunger by recognizing National Hunger Awareness Day. National Hunger Awareness Day is a day of unity for everyone in the United States to come together and show their support for one of the most solvable social issues in this country - hunger. Communities nationwide are planning more than 15,000 events in observance of National Hunger Awareness Day.
Oklahoma is ranked first in the nation for people experiencing hunger (USDA, 2005). In the state, more than 500,000 people wake up not knowing where their next meal will come from. In Eastern Oklahoma, children make up 41 percent of the people served each week by feeding programs.
The food that will be sorted and packaged on June 6, will go out to the 440 charitable feeding programs throughout 24 counties in Eastern Oklahoma, which feed thousands of people each week.
