Grand Rapids Rampage News Release

Grand Rapids, MI - The ArenaBowl XV Champion Grand Rapids Rampage on Wednesday announced that Michael Trigg has signed a two-year contract extension to remain the head coach and director of football operations for the Arena Football League team through the 2004 season.

Trigg has directed Grand Rapids from its inception in 1998 through the team's development into one of the AFL's premier franchises. In 2001, Trigg led the Rampage to a league-best 11-3 record and the team's first championship. With the 64-42 victory over the Nashville Kats in ArenaBowl XV, the Rampage became the first number-one seed to win a championship since Arizona in 1997. For his efforts, Trigg was named the AFL's 2001 Coach of the Year.

This past season, Trigg guided the Rampage to an 8-6 regular season record and the team's fourth consecutive playoff berth. He also became just the fifth coach in AFL history to reach the 60-win plateau and now ranks as the fifth winningest coach in AFL history.

"In just five seasons, coach Trigg not only has established the Rampage as one of the premier teams in the Arena Football League, but also has made his mark as one of the leading coaches in the league," said Dan DeVos, president and CEO of the Rampage. "He has proven himself on and off the field, and has earned the respect of our fan base and the West Michigan community. We feel that the talent we have, coupled with a coach of his experience, will enable us to bring another championship to Grand Rapids."

Before joining the Rampage, Trigg spent four seasons in the AFL with the Fort Worth Cavalry (1994) and Milwaukee Mustangs (1995-97). His all-time record in nine AFL campaigns is 62-58 during the regular season and 3-6 in the playoffs.

As a quarterback in the AFL, Trigg played with the Detroit Drive during their back-to-back championship season in 1989 and 1990, ranking as the league's second-rated passer in 1989.

A native of San Antonio, Texas, Trigg holds a degree in marketing and management and a teaching certificate for secondary education from East Texas State University, where he was a three-year starter at quarterback. He and his wife, Susan have two sons, Tanner and Tyler.

"Last week was probably the toughest week I have had in a long time. We didn't finish the season the way we wanted to, so we definitely have some unfinished business here in Grand Rapids. I personally think that every team has a window to win a championship, and our window is still open," Trigg said. "How many people can say they have been with a great organization for five years, and have that organization continue to want them back. Grand Rapids is a perfect fit for me as a coach and for my family."
