Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release
Traverse City, MI- Sean Murphy netted a hat trick, and led the Traverse City North Stars to a 6-2 victory over the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings on Friday night in Traverse City. The win for the North Stars makes the series 2-1, still in favor of Kalamazoo.
A slow start for Kalamazoo gave the North Stars of Traverse City a great opportunity to strike first. They didn't pass up the chance, as they found the back of the net on a four-minute power play late in the period. A centering feed from Will Badner found the stick of Sean Murphy, who put home is second of the post-season.
The second was full of scoring for both teams, starting with the second of the night from Murphy. His team leading third tally of the playoffs gave his team a 2-0 lead.
Three minutes and twenty-one seconds later, Jared Von Wormer lit the lamp for his first of the playoffs, while giving his team a three-goal lead.
Kalamazoo couldn't be silenced forever, though, as they clawed their way back during an extended 5-on-3 power play. Robbie Payne (3rd) scored on a rebound from the right-wing side off a shot from Chris Leone.
Twenty seconds later, and still on the man-advantage, Brandon Flood tallied his second of the playoffs to bring Kalamazoo to within a goal heading into the third period. Again getting the primary assist on the tally was Leone.
Under two minutes into the third, Murphy capped off the hat trick with his fourth of the playoffs to give his team a 4-2 lead.
Under three minutes later, Traverse City padded their lead to three with the first of the playoffs from Will Badner.
To make their win decisive, Chris Leibenger made it 6-2 with his sharp angle tally, 5:07 into the third period. There would be no more scoring, and Traverse City would walk away with a 6-2 lead.
The Jr. K-Wings will take the ice again tomorrow, at 7:05 pm against the Traverse City North Stars in game four of the best-of-five North Divisional Semifinals.
