
Trashers avoid elimination to Fury with 5-2 win

DANBURY, CT--The Danbury Trashers staved off elimination with a 5-2 win over the Muskegon Fury at a sold-out Danbury Ice Arena Friday night. Michael Rupp lead the scoring with a two-goal first period, while twelve Trashers recorded a point. The two teams will continue their playoff series Saturday night, as Danbury fights to return the series to Muskegon.
Jeff Daw scored the Trashers first goal of the night, from Doug Christiansen and John Morlang seconds shy of the 10-minute mark of the first period. At 11:24, Rupp scored his first goal of the night, assisted by Mathieu Wathier and Francis Belanger. Late in the opening period, the Fury's Scott Hollis cut the Trasher lead in half, the helpers going to Todd Robinson and Jeff Nelson. With a minute to go in the period, Rupp scored his second of the night, third of the playoffs, from Jay Murphy and Belanger to return Danbury's two-goal lead.
Ten minor penalties were assessed in the first period, followed by just one in the second, a holding call against Mike Bayrack at 8:35. Muskegon's Robin Bouchard scored his sixth goal of the season on the power play, from Robinson, to make it a one-goal game.
The third was without a penalty, but saw two Danbury goals. Johnathan Gagnon made it a 4-2 game with his third goal of the post-season, assisted by Bayrack at 14:02 and Belanger added an empty-net goal to his two assists at 18:59.
Scott Stirling got the win for Danbury, turning aside 25-of-27 shots. The Trashers' offense put 38 shots on Muskegon's Sylvain Daigle, who made 33 saves. The only power-play goal of the night was Muskegon's, who went 1-for-3, while Danbury was 0-for-2.
The Trashers prevented a sweep with the win, and will face the Fury on Saturday night at the Danbury Ice Arena starting at 7:00pm.
