Trappers top Tucson, win series

July 11, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Edmonton used a three-run first inning Sunday to defeat Tucson 4-2 in a game shortened to seven innings because of strong rain and hail Sunday at TELUS Field. The nickel sized hail covered the astroturf infield leaving a white blanket and rendering the field unplayable.

Edmonton won three of the four games in the series dropping the Sidewinders back to the .500 mark at 45-45. Tucson has lost 13 of its last 17 games and 21 of the last 32 games.

Tucson got on the board in the top of the first when Steve Neal's ground out plated Andy Green.

The 1-0 lead was shortlived as the Trappers responded with three runs in their first inning against Tucson starter Lance Cormier. Jerry Gil's throwing error allowed Henry Mateo to score and Ron Calloway to reach first base. Calloway would later score the third run in the inning on a ground out by Matt Cepicky. Two of the three runs were unearned.

Edmonton plated an additional run in the third inning to extend the lead to 4-1.

Jerry Gil connected for his ninth home run of the season in the fifth inning to trim the deficit to 4-2. However Trapper starter Wilton Chavez retired the last eight men he faced including Josh Kroeger who struck out to end the seventh.

Tucson mustered three hits in the loss.

Tucson is 45-45 on the season. The Sidewinders will be off for three days during the All Star Break. Tucson returns home Thursday night to host Sacramento in a 7:00 p.m. game. Craig Ansman and Steve Neal will travel to Pawtucket for the Triple-A All Star Game on Wednesday night. The game will be carried live on Cool 1450 AM at 4:10 p.m. (Tucson time) and broadcast live on ESPN 2.
