Montreal Alouettes News Release

Sherbrooke, June 5, 2014 - After a week of early mornings and mostly two-a-day practices, the Alouettes will get a welcome change to their routines this weekend.

Starting at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Alouettes players will take part in an intra-quad scrimmage on Coulter Field at Bishop's University, briefly trading their training camp grind for a game-day grind. Alouettes fans and football fans alike are welcome to attend the mock game as admission will be free.

Adding to the authenticity will be the presence of CFL officials, including referee Andre Proulx who will be on-site to throw flags when necessary as the players fine-tune for the upcoming season.

"It's a great opportunity for our fans to come and observe our game-day routine," explained Alouettes centre Luc Brodeur-Jourdain. "Our fans will get a better understanding of what goes on during a game. They'll see how we transition to the field and what goes on on the sidelines."

Alouettes head coach Tom Higgins revealed that he plans on running between 50 and 60 offensive plays on Saturday and also confirmed that Troy Smith will start at quarterback.

Bear Woods injury update

Linebacker Bear Woods, who injured himself during the second day of camp will be sidelined for a few weeks. The non-import linebacker is suffering from a hamstring injury.

Rapid fire

NFL scouts from the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears were in attendance on Thursday, closely watching the Alouettes practice. The Bears of course have many ties to the Alouettes, as former Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman is calling the shots in Chicago. The team also signed fromer Alouette Michael Ola a few days ago as well as Jesse Joseph, drafted by the Alouettes in 2013... Throughout the entire first week of camp, CIS coaches from the Quebec Conference as well as CEGEP Division 1 coaches were guests of the Alouettes and attended practices and team meetings... The play of the day belonged to cornerback Mitchell White who made a spectacular interception when rookie quarterback Collin Klein tried to hook up with receiver Eric Deslauriers... Wednesday night, Alouettes General Manager Jim Popp as well as defensive end John Bowman addressed over 250 underprivileged kids visiting Bishop's from the Centre Formation Environnement & Recyclage. Both got huge ovations from the kids in attendance who appreciated the encouraging words they had to offer.

Tomorrow

The Alouettes will hit the field starting at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, for a single practice on Coulter Field.
