Bakersfield Blitz News Release
Two-week camp gets underway with 36 players
BAKERSFIELD, CA (March 15, 2002) â The first training camp in team history begins Monday, March 18th, the Bakersfield Blitz announced today. 36 players have been invited to the two-week camp in hopes of making a roster spot for the 2002 season. Af2 teams are able to bring a maximum of 40 players to training camp.
"We've assembled a very talented group of football players," said head coach James Fuller. "Over the past few months my coaches and myself have evaluated players from here in Bakersfield as well as around the country and we've got some great talent."
Camp begins with two practices a day for the first week, Monday through Friday on McHale Field at Casa Loma Park in Bakersfield. Morning practice is from 9:45 â 11:30 AM and afternoon practices run from 1:30 â 3:15 PM. Coach Fuller and players will be available for interviews immediately after the afternoon practice session from 3:15 to 3:30.
The second week of camp, March 25 â 29, will move to the Blitz' practice facility at the Friendship House Community Center located at 2424 Cottonwood Road. Times are yet to be announced, but will differ from the first week's schedule.
The Bakersfield Blitz kicks off its season on April 6th at San Diego. The first home game is April 20th at the Centennial Garden against the Louisville Fire. Kickoff is set for 7 pm with the pre-game tailgate party starting at 5:30 in front of the Garden.
More than two million fans have attended arenafootball2 games in the league's two-year history. In 2000, af2 began its inaugural season with 15 teams. The league expanded to 28 teams in 2001, making it the fastest single-league expansion in the history of sports.
