Gwinnett Stripers News Release
DURHAM, NC - Right-hander Touki Toussaint kept the first-place Durham Bulls off balance all night, tossing 7.0 scoreless, three-hit innings and striking out eight to lead the Gwinnett Stripers to a 5-0 win on Thursday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Gwinnett won the five-game series 3-2 and earned a split of the season series with Durham, 11-11.
The Stripers jumped all over former Gwinnett pitcher Ryan Weber, the starter for the Bulls. Austin Riley blasted a solo home run (8) to left-center, his third clout of the series, for a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Gwinnett made it 2-0 in the third as Sean Kazmar Jr. scored on a double play grounder from Luis Marte, and Rio Ruiz lifted a towering three-run homer (8) to right field for a 5-0 lead in the fourth.
Toussaint pitched out of a two-on, two-out jam in the bottom of the first with help from second baseman Ryan Flaherty, who made a diving catch in shallow right field to take away an RBI for Nate Lowe.
From there, Toussaint (W, 4-0) cruised. He retired 14 straight batters before issuing a walk to Kean Wong with one out in the sixth, then proceeded to retire five of his final six batters faced. The only hits against him were singles by Andrew Velazquez, Brandon Snyder and Rob Refsnyder.
Left-hander Adam McCreery took over in the eighth and set down all six batters he faced, striking out three. McCreery fanned Snyder in the ninth to complete Gwinnett's 13th shutout of the season.
Toussaint, rated Atlanta's No. 7 prospect by MLB.com, lowered his ERA to 1.62 with the outing, his fifth quality start in seven starts on his Triple-A debut with Gwinnett.
Offensively for the Stripers, Riley went 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs scored and one RBI, and Ruiz went 2-for-4 with a homer and a game-high three RBIs. Michael Reed extended his on-base streak to 13 games with a 2-for-4 showing.
Weber (L, 8-6) exited after 5.0 innings with five runs on six hits, two home runs allowed and two strikeouts. Three Durham relievers - Jaime Schultz, Hoby Milner and Ian Gibaut - combined on 4.0 scoreless innings the rest of the way.
The Stripers (63-65) have off on Friday before continuing the road trip on Saturday at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte. Gwinnett will play a rare day-night doubleheader vs. the Charlotte Knights, with game one starting at 1:05 p.m. and game two set for 7:04 p.m. Starting pitchers for both nine-inning games have yet to be announced. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM "The Other Side of the River" beginning at 12:35 p.m.
