Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE - The Tourists once again scored their runs early and once again did so often. Asheville scored five times in the first off RiverDogs ace Dellin Betances to lead the way to a 8-0 win, propelling the Tourists to first place in the South Atlantic League's Southern Division.

With a 1-0 lead, Jeff Cunningham blew things open in the bottom of the first with a three-run home run to left field off Betances (4-2). David Christiansen would follow with his first of two solo home runs to make it a 5-0 Asheville lead after the first inning.

Christiansen's second home run added to the lead in the third and the Tourists would tally yet another an inning later. Michael Mitchell's single to right and right fielder Chase Odenreider's ensuing miscue would allow Lars Davis to score the game's seventh run. The Tourists would add another unearned run in the eighth for the final margin.

Unlike Betances, Jhoulys Chacin (5-1) gave the type of dominating performance befitting of a staff ace. Chacin threw seven scoreless innings on four hits while walking two and striking out five to get the win. Edgmer Escalona threw two scoreless no-hit innings to preserve the shutout.

The win marks the second time the Tourists have been in first within the last week. Asheville came into the homestand last Saturdya with a half game lead over the RiverDogs and will carry the same lead on the road after a 6-2 homestand.

The Tourists will begin their eight-game road trip in Savannah on Monday night, after taking Mother's Day off. The Tourists will send Cory Riordan (4-2, 2.40) to the mound. The Sand Gnats starter is to be announced. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on the Tourists flagship station WRES-FM.

The Tourists return home from their road trip on Tuesday May 20th for their first meeting of the year with the Rome Braves at 7:05 p.m. It will be another Kids Eat Free Night, presented by Papa John's Pizza, and the first of three Goodwill Nights at the ballpark. Bring any three new or gently used clothing items to McCormick Field and receive a free general admission ticket for that night's game.
