St. Louis Steamers News Release
Many thought the scoring chances would be tough coming into the game Saturday afternoon when the St. Louis Steamers and the defending MISL champions Milwaukee Wave hooked up at the U.S. Cellular Arena. That held true all the way into overtime when Todd Dusosky sent the crowd home with the Wave taking down the visiting Steamers, 6-5.
The Wave entered the game leading the MISL in goals against and Steamers goalkeeper, Brett Phillips, was the reigning MISL Goalkeeper of the Week. The scoring got started by Todd Dusosky on a restart goal assisted from #21 Giuliano Oliviero. It was the first restart chance of the game for either team and ended what was a defensive struggle for both teams. Brett Phillips continued his hot play by turning them away and keeping the score 1-0 after one quarter.
With the team trailing at the start of the second quarter, the Steamers came out with a flury of scoring chances connecting early on with a goal by Shaun David at the 11 second mark from forward Mike Apple. 2:25 later, Apple added a goal of his own from defender Genoni Martinez. With the first half winding down, Mike Apple added another goal from David inside the last minute to give the Steamers a 3-1 lead going into halftime.
After a defensive start to the third quarter, D.J. Newsom scored a restart goal from Collinsville, IL native Joe Reiniger 10:47 into the third quarter to give the Steamers a 4-1 lead. Soon after, the Steamers went on a power play only to see the Wave get back into it with a shorthanded goal by Marcello Fontana assisted by Jonathan Greenfield at the 12:51 mark of the quarter. The goal made the game 4-2 at the end of the third quarter with the Steamers on top.
The Wave cut the score to 4-3 on a fantastic head goal by #23 Chad Dombroski from #21 Giuliano Oliviero at 5:12 mark of the fourth quarter. Brett Phillips went up to grab it out of the air, but before he could get a hand on it, Dombroski knocked it in the net. Then, with 3:50 to go in the game, Matt Schmidt scored to tie the game at four. Giuliano Oliviero was a part of the scoring again with an assist on the goal. It was Oliviero's third assist of the game.
The Steamers took the lead in the final minute of the fourth quarter when Sandre Naumosky put them up 5-4. It appeared that would be the game winner, but unfortunately for the Steamers, Oliviero wasn't done. His head ball into the net at the final second of the game, sent it into overtime.
The opening of overtime saw both teams with chances as the game action went back and forth. That's when Todd Dusosky knocked in the winner after an assist from Matt Schmidt at the 5:56 mark.
