Dayton Dutch Lions News Release
WEST CARROLLTON, OH - The Dayton Dutch Lions (2-5-2) rounded out a double header with the Women as they hosted the Rochester Rhinos FC (3-2-5) on Sunday evening at DOC Stadium. Dayton showed up in pink to show support for cancer awareness and to support the Pink Ribbon Girls Foundation. They also proudly wore pink on behalf of cancer survivors and their families and in honor of those who have lost their lives to cancer. The fundraiser was a great success as fans showed their support by purchasing shirts, purchasing balloons for release during the half and participating in a silent auction.
The Dayton Dutch Lions FC got off to a solid start, passing the ball around in the back trying to play through the midfield with Guilherme as target man. The Brazilian native made his debut in the starting eleven and was strong on the ball the first half. In the eighteenth minute Rochester's Levi Houapeu hit the outside corner of the goal hard with his shot. Dayton responded when in the twenty sixth minute Guilherme Felix drove the ball down the left side and crossed right to Garner who tapped to Schoenfeld in the middle. Dayton's Schoenfeld sent off a hard left footed shot that just missed the goal right. Again in the thirty seventh minute the Lions created a good chance when Brock Granger ran down the right and put the ball up for Garner who came across, but he touched the ball just a little too hard, and sent the ball out behind the goal. The Lions keeper Williams kept Dayton in the game in the forty second minute when Rochester pressed hard and a fierce shot found him diving through the air for the save. Despite both teams having several chances, the teams found themselves tied 0-0 at the half.
With the game scoreless, both teams came out in the second half aggressively trying to get the elusive goal. Rochester struck first and in the forty sixth minute the Rhinos Alex Dixon sped down the right side with Dayton's Sebastian Thuriere at his side, but Dixon was quick on the cross and his ball found Levi Houapeu who sent it flying into the net. The sixty eighth minute found Rochester's Dixon sneaking behind Dayton's defense and with impressive speed running right fired a shot off left which hit the far post hard, denying a goal for the second time of the night. The Lions had a couple of good runs toward the Rhinos goal, in the second half but no real chances developed. A lightning delay in the sixty eighth minute sent both teams to the locker room with the Rochester Rhinos up by one. After a long delay (over 2 hours) and a brief warm up, the teams took to the field again. The Lions immediately came out and tried to surprise the Rhinos with a long ball from the back to Joe Broekhuizen, the ball went a bit too far however and Rochester's keeper Soffner was there before Broekhuizen was able to get his head on it. Garner made a run down the left in the seventy seventh minute and tried to make the turn but the wet turf had he, and the ball sliding out of bounds. Long throw ins by Matt Wiet in the eighty first and eighty seventh minutes went into the box and were slapped down by a Dayton player but just went wide. The Lions desperate for a goal started to play the long ball, and kept the pressure up on Rochester's defense. The Rhinos defense and keeper held steady however. The game ended with the score Rochester Rhinos 1 and the Dayton Dutch Lions FC 0.
The Dayton Dutch Lions Men's Coach Sid van Druenen had this to say about the game. "It was a tough loss. We have been struggling against teams that play this style (4-4-2). I think we started off the season with very promising results, and we have some disappointing results since then. We started off the game really well today, I think again for the first twenty five minutes we showed some good soccer and that's what we have to keep building on. With the weather delay and with one goal against us we took some risks, but we just weren't able to score. I think it is important now that we keep our heads up and we have to keep focusing on what we are trying to do. We have a very important trip to California coming up, that's our focus now."
The Dayton Dutch Lions (2-5-2) will travel to play the Orange County Blues FC (3-7-0) Saturday, June 7th at 10:00pm est at anteater Stadium at UCI. The next night Sunday, June 8th they will be at the LA Galaxy II (6-2-3) at StubHub Center playing at 11pm est. For season and individual game tickets, visit the Dutch Lions website.
