Tortugas Take First Two

Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

DAYTONA, FL (July 23, 2015) - Jackie Robinson Ballpark hasn't been very kind to the Stone Crabs so far this season. Whether it's the ghosts of falling here early in the 2013 Florida State League Championship or the overwhelming home support from the crowd, it seems like they're just missing a beat in Daytona. Wednesday night's game came down to the very end with the Tortugas hanging on for a 5-2 victory despite constant pressure from Charlotte in the ninth. In game two, an early deficit was too much for the 'Crabs to overcome, and two prime opportunities in the sixth and seventh went away as the Tortugas hung on for a 3-2 victory before a crowd of 3,558.

It would have been very difficult for Hunter Wood to replicate his first start when he dealt seven scoreless innings against the Yankees. Daytona's recent hot stretch, especially at home, started in the second when Taylor Sparks hit his eighth home run to left for a 1-0 lead. Chad Wallach then followed with a single, but Armando Araiza's fine defensive night started with a throw to second that caught Wallach trying to steal for the final out. The Tortugas soon added two more runs in the third on an RBI groundout from Carlton Daal and a two out single by Daniel Pigott.

For the first four innings, Seth Varner was awfully sharp and barely broke a sweat. The 'Crabs only baserunners during that time came on a first inning single from Mike Marjama and a ball that plunked Granden Goetzman in the fourth. Otherwise, all was quiet against the lefthander, who had gone 0-2 with an ERA north of five in his first four Florida State League starts.

The tide started to turn in the fifth when Braxton Lee bunted a single to the right side with two outs for the 'Crabs second hit. A wild pitch advanced the center fielder to second, and he'd soon score on Yoel Araujo's line single into left. Araujo took off for second on a steal attempt, but Wallach's throw from behind the plate just beat him to the bag to retire the side.

In the sixth, Kean Wong reached on a fielding error by Pigott at first. Marjama then lined a double the other way into right to put the tying runs in scoring position for the middle of the order. A Granden Goetzman groundout to short brought in a run to make it 3-2, and Varner's night ultimately ended after he plunked Jace Conrad to put runners at the corners. Scott Brattvet got the first call, and began his night by getting Pat Blair to ground out to second to end the threat.

A four pitch walk to Araiza and a line single into left by Lee put the first two runners on in the Stone Crabs seventh. Araujo then laid down a sacrifice bunt, and prompted another pitching change as Nolan Becker came in for Brattvet. After striking out Andrew Velazquez, Wong drew another walk to load the bases. However, Marjama flied out to straightaway center and neither team would score for the rest of the night as the Tortugas got by 3-2.

The series reverts to Charlotte Sports Park on Friday night at 7:00 PM when Brent Honeywell (2-2, 4.85 ERA) goes up against Jackson Stephens (8-5, 3.16 ERA). When gates open, fans can enjoy FREE draft beer at the tiki bar until the end of the 1st inning with the purchase of a SPECIAL $15 ticket!
