Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Dylan Cozens collected three hits to back a strong start by Brandon Leibrandt, but the Clearwater Threshers came up short in a 3-2 loss in ten innings to the Jupiter Hammerheads at Bright House Field.
Cozens, who had been sidelined since June 18, finished 3-for-4 with a run scored in his second game back from the disabled list.
Leibrandt meanwhile delivered seven solid innings in the no-decision. The lefty, who entered Thursday's outing with the sixth-best ERA in the Florida State League, held Jupiter to two runs on three hits and a walk across his seven frames.
Jupiter (9-19) claimed the opening run on the first of three Hammerheads homers. Harold Riggins knocked a two-out solo shot to the opposite-field berm in right to give Jupiter the 1-0 lead in the second.
Aaron Brown had an answer in the third. He pounced on a 1-0 offering from Jarlin Garcia and crushed his seventh homer of the year to right, knotting the game up at one.
An inning later, the Hammerheads would ride the bat of Austin Dean to a 2-1 advantage, as Dean left the yard for his fifth long ball.
Down a run in the fifth inning, Cozens crushed a double to right field on a line to open the frame, and Chace Numata singled up the middle to set up men at the corners. Brown then grounded a fielder's choice to short, allowing Cozens to cross the plate and again tie the ballgame.
The teams remained in a 2-2 deadlock until the tenth.
Ulises Joaquin (4-2) retired the first two men he faced on just six pitches, and was ahead of James Roberts 1-2. Roberts then lofted a long fly into the Hammerheads bullpen for his first jack in a Jupiter uniform, bumping the Hammerheads to a 3-2 lead.
The teams are now even in the series at a game apiece, and will square off for the third of a four-game set on Friday with first pitch at 6:30 p.m. Ricardo Pinto (3-1) takes the mound against Jose Adames (3-2), and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network beginning at 6:15 p.m.
Friday is also Beach Chamber Night at Bright House Field, with a post-game concert by Hunks of Funk to follow. Tickets can be purchased here or in-person at the Threshers Box office.
