Tortugas Bats Silenced Down the Stretch in Loss

June 16, 2015 - Florida State League (FSL) - Daytona Tortugas News Release

Fort Myers, FL - The Daytona Tortugas opened up an early 2-0 lead on Monday night at Hammond Stadium, but their hot bats were quickly cooled off as the Fort Myers Miracle finished the game with three unanswered runs to take a 3-2 win in the series opener.

CF Junior Arias blasted a solo homer over the left field fence to start the scoring in the first, andSS Alex Blandino and 1B Chad Wallach each hit doubles in the second to extend the lead to 2-0.

From there, the Tortugas would be held to no runs and three hits (including two infield singles) over the final seven innings.

RHP Nick Travieso retired the first two men he faced, but a comeback liner caught him in the arm and forced him to leave the game after nine pitches. LHP Nick Routt came on and pitched admirably in emergency relief, surrendering just one unearned run on three hits with one walk and one strikeout in 4.1 innings.

The unearned run scored in the third, when Zach Granite reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a misplayed pickoff throw. Engelb Vielma then got Fort Myers on the board with an RBI single to left field.

Trailing 2-1, the Miracle would strike again in the sixth when LHP Nolan Becker (BS, 3) took the hill. After a single from Chad Christensen and a sacrifice bunt by Vielma, Ryan Walker snuck a ground ball through the middle to even the score at 2-2.

RHP Joe Mantoni (L, 1-1) retired the first two men he faced, but hit Bryan Haar with a one-out pitch in the seventh, which lead to the eventual game winning rally. Jason Kanzler lined a single to right to put runners on first and second, then Christensen hit a double-play ball to second base. 2B Carlton Daal flipped to Blandino for the first out, but the throw to first sailed past Wallach into Daytona's dugout, allowing Haar to score from third to give Fort Myers a 3-2 lead.

The Tortugas mustered just one hit in the final four innings, a one-out double from DH Robert Ramirez, who looped a pitch to right-center and beat out a strong throw at second base. Ramirez moved to third on a groundout, but Alex Muren (S, 2) struck out C Joe Hudson to end Game 1.

LHP Amir Garrett (2-5, 3.20 ERA) is scheduled to face Ryan Eades (4-1, 2.97 ERA) on Tuesday night in Fort Myers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET, and fans can listen to the action on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:50 p.m. ET.
