Topeka Tames Wild In 2-1 Win

December 16, 2011 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Topeka Pilots News Release

The Topeka RoadRunners used a combination of timely scoring and solid defensive play to craft a 2-1 win over Wenatchee on Friday night.

The 'Runners came out with an inspired effort early, and it paid off with an early goal as Kyle Sharkey walked off the right wing boards into the high slot and fired a low shot that was redirected by Ryan White for the 1-0 lead at 4:14 of the first period. Jake Lynes picked up an assist on the goal and Topeka led 1-0 after 1.

In the second period, Wenatchee capitalized on a failed clearing attempt and Kyle Vogel buried a backhander at 10:25 to tie the game. Just a few minutes later, Topeka retook the lead when Ryan White slipped the puck into the low slot and Dan Dupell stuffed it home for the 2-1 lead at 14:20. Jake Lynes picked up his second assist of the night on the play and the 'Runners held a 2-1 lead after two periods.

The third period saw Wenatchee come out with renewed vigor and their pressure created some good opportunities, but the combination of solid goaltending by Peter Traber and alert, responsible defensive zone play by the rest of the 'Runners held Wenatchee at bay. With 1:13 left in the game, the Wild opted to pull the goalie for the extra attacker. Each team used their time outs in the final minute, and Topeka was able to seal the 2-1 win, a season high fifth consecutive victory. Traber stopped 30 shots in collecting his ninth win and moving into the Top 10 in the NAHL with a 2.31 goals against average.

Topeka (19-10-2) and Wenatchee (13-9-4) close out their pre-Christmas portion of the schedule Saturday night at 7:05.
