Topeka Pilots News Release

The Topeka RoadRunners claimed a hard-fought overtime win on Friday, and saw their comeback attempt fall shorton Saturday as they departed Springfield with a weekend split.

The task before the 'Runners was a bit of a challenge, the Jr. Blues having won three in a row and being undefeated (4-0-0) at home. Cam Strong got Topeka on the board midway through the second, and the lone goal stood until 6:26 of the third period when Springfield was finally able to get a shot behind Tyler Johnson. For the second game in a row, the 'Runners were headed to overtime. The 3-on-3 format allowed Topeka to outshoot Springfield 5-2 in the extra frame, the last of which fired home by Yu Hikosaka from the lower left circle, set up by Ryan O'Connor. Topeka's second consecutive 2-1 overtime road win marked the first time in club history of back-to-back overtime (non-shootout) wins.

On Saturday night, Springfield wasted no time, scoring in the game's opening minute on a seeing eye shot from the right point through traffic. Luka Maver responded with a power play goal to knot the score at one apiece, set up by JB Baker and Shawn Brennan. The second period is when the damage was done, as the 'Runners were victimized twice on shorthanded breakaways that resulted in Springfield goals and the Jr. Blues strutted out to a 3-1 lead to begin the third. JB Baker was able to backhand a rebound in to close the gap to 3-2 but that would prove to be the final as Topeka settled for a split for the third weekend in a row.

Topeka (9-9-0) heads home for a quick two game set with the Jr. Blues (10-3-2) this Friday and Saturday. The 'Runners are 5-3-0 in Landon Arena this season.
