Top Two Defenses Meet in Steel City on Wednesday Night
May 29, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Nashville SC News Release
NASHVILLE - Riding a six-game unbeaten streak, Nashville SC will continue their two-game road stint as they battle Eastern Conference heavyweights, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, Wednesday night at 6 p.m. CT. Nashville will try to snap the Riverhounds unbeaten season in league action.
The match will mark the second meeting between the two clubs this regular season. The Riverhounds traveled to Nashville for a match on March 24th when the squad's played to a nil-nil draw at Nissan Stadium. The result was a microcosm of the season for both teams as the teams are the top two defenses in the league. Pittsburgh has allowed a paltry five goals while Nashville has allowed just six.
Pittsburgh Breakdown
The Riverhounds have a nearly impenetrable defense, allowing just the five goals in USL play, the best mark in all of the league. In addition, the Riverhounds have also posted a league-best seven clean sheets. Pittsburgh has not conceded a goal on their home pitch in a league match this season en route to their best start in club history.
Despite a stout defense, the Riverhounds have struggled offensively as of late. The club has been shutout three times this season at Highmark Stadium, including their last two home games against Indy Eleven and Penn FC. The club has played a rigorous schedule recently, as Wednesday's game will mark the fifth game in 14 days.
Nashville Narratives
Nashville SC continues a long road stretch in USL play with their match against Pittsburgh. The game will mark the seventh road game in the first 10 USL games for Nashville. In its first six USL road games, Nashville has picked up just one road win, but have earned results in four of the six matches. Nashville will also rely heavily on its defense and goalkeeper Matt Pickens who has recorded five clean sheets for Nashville, sitting atop the conference among keepers. The club has scored four goals in USL play this month as they try to catch the top of the Eastern Conference.
Nashville's Lebo Moloto and Taylor Washington are no strangers to the Riverhounds. Moloto spent the 2015-2016 seasons on the Pittsburgh roster. He tallied seven goals and eight assists for the club during his stint. Washington played on the Riverhounds backline last season, making 29 appearances in black and gold.
Watching the East
Nashville earned a valuable point after their road draw last weekend to keep them in 10th place in the USL Eastern Conference Standings. Nashville has earned 13 points in its nine games, averaging 1.4 points per game played. The squad is still in good position, sitting just a game back from playoff position.
