Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, GA - In the first of a two-game set, the AIFA's top 2 offensive teams, the Columbus Lions (6-2) and the first place Mississippi Mudcats (7-0) are set to collide this Friday Night at 7:30 PM at the Columbus Civic Center in a Southern Division showdown.
Last week both clubs edged out their opponents with last second field goals. Trey Crum hit the game winner for the Mudcats as they squeaked by Florence 40-39. Leading the AIFA in scoring, Lions kicker Hunter Smith nailed a 23 yard field to help defeat division rival Augusta 51-48.
Through 7 games, both clubs rank 1-2 in many offensive categories including scoring offense. Both Columbus and Mississippi primarily get it done offensively through the air as both are tops in the AIFA in total offense and passing offense.
The Mudcats have stayed undefeated due to the scoring trio of Quarterback Tommy Jones and Wide Receiver Daryl Carter. Carter leads the league in receiving yards with 103 yards per game and touchdowns with 18. Veteran Quarterback Tommy Jones leads the league in passing touchdowns with 40 while only throwing 7 interceptions on 194 passing attempts.
Much like the Mudcats, the Lions are led by their Quarterback Joey Conrad. Only difference is they have a trio of wide receivers leading the AIFA with Gerald Gales, Silas Daniels, and Anthony Merritt. All three rank in the top five in touchdowns, while Gales and Merritt rank 1-2 in receptions with 62 and 59 respectively.
Fans can watch every play by going to www.columbuslions.net and clicking on the LionsTV icon.
