The Marshals News Release

Cincinnati, OH – The Cincinnati Marshals conquered the adversity of the past few weeks to bring home a victory for their fans on Saturday as they defeated the Rome Renegades 43-33 at U.S. Bank Arena.

Head Coach Tony Wells earned his first victory as a Marshal after joining the team on Wednesday.

"These guys worked hard to earn this victory," said Wells. "We only practiced once this week but they stepped up and learned the new system in time to execute tonight. I think we showed the fans that we're back and ready to make a run in the playoffs."

The Marshals jumped out to an early lead when Rayshawn Askew ran for the first of his four touchdowns on the night with 10:44 remaining in the first quarter. Kicker Jesse Obert added a 33 yard field goal later in the quarter to give the Marshals a 9-0 lead. The Renegades Perry Tisdale narrowed the lead to three on a one yard touchdown run to end the first quarter.

The Renegades tied the score 30-30 late in the third quarter when Nick Hunter caught a 22 yard pass from Bo Bartik. Marshals quarterback Brett Dietz answered by walking untouched into the endzone with 0:49 left in the quarter. The newest Marshal, Ben Labell, who joined the team late Friday night, sealed the home victory for the Marshals on a one yard touchdown run with 8:18 remaining in the game. The Marshals defense concluded the game by holding the Renegades to only a field goal in the fourth quarter.

The win moves the Marshals to 5-5, third place in the Atlantic East Division, a half game behind second place Dayton. Rome, 5-6 is tied for second place (5-6) in the Atlantic Central Division with the Fayetteville Guard. Both teams are strong candidates for the playoffs at this point in the season.

Back On Track The Marshals defense had an outstanding game Saturday, holding the Renegades to only 127 total yards on the night. They forced two fumbles, recovering one, and stopped the Renegades three times in the Red Zone.

"We really stepped it up tonight," said Marshals defensive back Ron Carpenter. "Due to the lack of outside distractions this week, we were able to concentrate and focus on football. This let the true Marshals team shine through to the fans. Coach Wells set forth a solid game plan and the guys executed it well. We feel rejuvenated and ready to make a run at the playoffs."

Close, But No Cigar Marshals running back Rayshawn Askew needed seven touchdowns to tie the single season touchdown record of 46. He scored four against Rome, leaving him three shy of the record.
