JOHNSTOWN - The Johnstown Tomahawks defeated the Aston Rebels 4-3 in a physical contest Friday night at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
The Tomahawks opened up the scoring with Brendan Jaquay's third goal of the season. After a long shift, Jaquay found a loose puck and placed it past Rebels goaltender Darion Hanson.
A Tomahawk penalty proved costly as Rebels defenseman Jerry Miettuten fired a shot past Johnstown goalie Ryan Glander to tie the score at one goal.
Alex Alger gained back the Tomahawks lead with a power-play goal of his own at the 7:55 mark of the opening period. Alger's fifth goal of the season was assisted by Andrew Romano.
Aston tied the game on a controversial goal late in the first frame. Austin Swingle scored when the net appeared to be off its moorings. The goal stood and the game was tied at two going into the first intermission.
Johnstown connected on the man advantage again in the early stages of the second period. Kelly O'Brien tapped the puck past the outstretched pad of Hanson to give the Tomahawks a 3-2 lead, which they would take into intermission.
The Rebels tied the game midway through the third period off a second Swingle goal.
Tasked with trying to take the lead again in the game, the Tomahawks went to work. Johnstown generated chances on Hanson and their hard work paid off when Dalton Hunter chipped the puck past the goal line late in period.
Hunter's fourth goal of the season was assisted by Anthony Parrucci and Adam Ostrowski.
Aston failed to convert a last-minute power play and the Tomahawks held on for a 4-3 lead.
Glander picked up the victory, his third of the season, stopping 25 shots of 28 from Aston. Hanson registered the loss in a 24-dave performance.
Johnstown is back at home Saturday Nov. 28 at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena for a 7 p.m., facoff against the Aston Rebels. Fans are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal for the traditional Teddy Bear Toss. For tickets, 1-800-745-3000 or visit the War Memorial Box Office.
