Trenton Titans News Release
TRENTON, N.J. - Former Titans defenseman and fan-favorite Vince Williams has been named the first head coach of the re-established Trenton Titans.
This will be the first head-coaching position for Williams, who served a five-year apprenticeship as an assistant coach with the Trenton Devils.
"I'm very excited to get an opportunity like this,'' said Williams, 35 and a native of Ottawa, Ont., who played in 336 games with the Titans, second behind Special Assistant to Hockey Operations Scott Bertoli. "Trenton is a great hockey market in many ways.
"I have to thank the Devils for giving me an opportunity to be an assistant coach and learn under men such as Rick Kowalsky and Kevin Dean. I am certainly looking forward to working with the Flyers organization.''
Williams performed with the Titans from 1999-2001, returning in 2002-03. He was a key performer on Trenton's 2004-05 Kelly Cup team before finishing his career in 2005-06.
"The opportunity is enhanced because I get to work with (Titans President/.CEO) Rich Lisk again,'' said Williams. "He brought me back (in 2002-03) after I was traded away. My career certainly has centered in Trenton.''
Lisk is just as pleased to have Williams in the fold.
"Vince typifies what the Titans are,'' said Lisk. "I look forward to watching him grow as a head coach. I couldn't be happier with our choice of our first head coach of the re-established Titans,''
Williams knows what he wants to see from his team.
"We will play hockey at the highest level,'' said Williams. "We will play fundamental, solid hockey and be hard-working. I will expect that from our players every game.
"I know what it's like to win a championship. In our league, everyone aims for the Kelly Cup. That's what we're aiming for.''
