Minneapolis, Minn. -- The New York Titans of the National Lacrosse League were defeated 12-9 by the Minnesota Swarm at the Xcel Energy Center Saturday night, bringing their record to 6-6. The Titans next game takes place at home at the Garden on Saturday, April 12 versus the Colorado Mammoth at 8pm. It will be their first game back at home since their overtime win over the Buffalo Bandits on February 10.
With the loss against the Swarm, the Titans remain in fifth place in the East, one game behind the 7-5 Toronto Rock.
New York and Minnesota each had slow first halves Saturday night. The Titans only scored three goals against a tight Minnesota defense. The Swarm were only able to get five goals past Titans.
In the second half of play, the Titans turned it on, scoring four consecutive goals to take a 7-5 lead over the Swarm in the third quarter. The Swarm were able to get one goal in two minutes before the quarter expired, cutting the Titans lead to one goal.
In the fourth quarter of play, the Swarm got two quick goals to reclaim their lead. But Pat Maddalena scored a power play goal for the Titans less than five minutes in to tie the score at 8-8.
The Swarm then went on a scoring spree, netting three unanswered goals and taking an 11-8 lead over the Titans with just over three minutes remaining.
With less than three minutes to go in regulation, Jordan Hall scored an underhanded goal off an assist from Casey Powell to bring the score to 11-9, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Swarm, who notched one more goal before the clock expired.
Ryan Boyle was the Titans leader in points on the night, with six off of one goal and five assists. Pat Maddalena scored a hat trick for the Titans.
Minnesota forward Ryan Ward was the game's leader in points with seven off of three goals and four assists for Minnesota.
The Titans return to the Garden on Saturday, April 12 at 8pm, when they take on the Colorado Mammoth. The team plays three weekends in a row at the Garden with home games on the 12th, the 18th and the 26th.
