Vermont Frost Heaves News Release
We're still a good two months from the first Tuesday in March, but notwithstanding what the calendar says, I'm going to convene another Town Meeting.
Our last, you'll recall, was the online plebiscite in which you, the members of the Bump in the Road Club, chose former Cabot Husky Will Voigt as the Frost Heaves' coach. Not a bad bit of choosing, I'd say, when we survey our 12-3 record and lofty perch in the ABA power rankings. So given the Solomonic wisdom the fans have displayed, it's time to entrust you with another momentous decision.
Word has just come down from the league office that each team in the league is to nominate one of its players to participate in the ABA All-Star Game in Halifax, Nova Scotia, over the weekend of January 26 to 28. The nominee from each of the Top 20 teams in the power rankings as of this Saturday will be automatically named to either the East or the West squad.
Who's the most worthy All-Star from among a deep, balanced and strikingly unselfish crop of Frost Heaves? Is it Aaron Cook, who has shot so sweetly all season and scored those epic seven points in four seconds to allow us to force overtime and go on to beat Rochester? Is it Kevin Mickens, whose stretch-run bursts at the offensive end won games for us against Buffalo and Newark? Is it Antonio Burks, who has rained three-pointer after three-pointer to confound defenses? Is it Tyrone Levett, who swaggers into fourth quarters like a closer from the bullpen? Or is it Tyrone Barley, or Travarus Bennett, or John Bryant, or Melvin Creddle, all of whom have helped give our pressure defense a fearsome reputation around the league?
I have no idea. So what I'm asking you to do is send a name, along with a brief reason for your choice, to info@vermontfrostheaves.com .
From your nominees we'll do up a ballot, complete with stats and excerpts from your nominating e-mails, and let the entire Bump Club vote. The league needs our choice by January 5, so tarry not. We'll try to get the ballot out to all Bump Clubbers right after New Year's.
If you need more evidence on which to base your nominations, be sure to get to our back-to-back games in Barre this weekend. Saturday, Dec. 30, is First in Fitness Ball Night, with new NCAA Division I-AA career touchdown leader and Spaulding High grad David Ball suiting up as the Northfield Savings Bank 110% Community All-Star, and free miniballs to the first 100 kids to go through the door. The opponent is Cape Cod, and tipoff is 7:05 p.m.
The Frenzy return to the Aud the next afternoon for a special 1:05 New Year's Eve matinee. If you've been waiting for a game to bring the kids to; or one worthy of that long drive from the Kingdom or the Upper Valley; or a chance to share Vermont's Own Pro Basketball Experience with friends or relatives who might be visiting for the holidays, this is your opportunity. We'll have 14-year-old singing sensation Bethany Carrier of Williamstown doing the Anthem. Thunder Road driver Brent Dragon, last summer's Milk Bowl champ, will be the 110%er-on the bench, in uniform and ready if needed. Talented teens from Urban Dance Complex will perform at halftime. And the Times-Argus will give one lucky fan a chance to win $10,000 with its Pick-a-Spot challenge. The doors open at noon-and there'll be plenty of time to get in all your First Night revelry afterward.
For tickets, stop by the Barre Opera House during regular box office hours, or First in Fitness in Montpelier, behind City Hall. Or you can go through the Flynn Regional Box Office, 153 Main Street in Burlington; 802-86-FLYNN; or flynntix.org.
