PORTLAND - Strikers McKinley Tennyson and Fadi Afash scored three first half goals, propelling the Portland Timbers to their first home victory of the season with a 4-1 win over divisional rival Calgary in front of 2,772 fans at PGE Park Wednesday.
The victory was the second straight for the Timbers after the club lost their first three matches. Both victories have come in a home-and-home set with the Storm.
Tennyson and Afash, honored prior to the game for being the A-League's top scorers in 2002, proved their worth by scoring all of the Timbers' first half goals. Afash, who had the Timbers' lone goal of the game Monday at Calgary, needed only 32 seconds to open scoring, easily tapping a ball into the left side of the Calgary net past Storm goalie Jamey Glasnovic. The strike was the fastest in the two-plus year history of the franchise.
Tennyson followed up with the next two Portland strikes. His first, at the 6:58 mark, came when the Storm defense left the Indianapolis native a wide lane to the left of the net, easily connecting on Afash's assist for the 2-0 lead. His second goal came during extra time last in the first, taking Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar's pass across the penalty box and hitting from the left corner.
Calgary split Tennyson's goal with one of their own in the 36th minute, as Mark Korthuis rebounded a save off Portland goalkeeper Cole Burgman for what would be the Storm's only score of the evening.
Jason Melendez added an insurance strike in the 80th minute, connecting on a right side shot that came just off the hands of Glasnovic.
The match nearly took an ugly turn in the 82nd minute when an elbow from Alcaraz-Cuellar landed in the face of Storm defender Conrad Chala. The yellow card offense nearly caused a melee between the two sides.
Timbers' rookie goalkeeper Cole Burgman earned his second victory in as many games, making four saves on the evening while facing seven Storm shots.
