Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - After a pair of league games at home to open the month of July, the Portland Timbers take to the road this weekend as they face the Chicago Fire at TOYOTA PARK on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. (PT).
Saturday's match, which is the second and final regular-season matchup between Portland and Chicago, will be televised on KPTV FOX 12 and in Spanish on estrellaTV, with live local radio broadcasts on 750 AM The Game and in Spanish on La Pantera 940 AM.
On the road for the first time this month, the Timbers aim for their first win on the road this season.
The Timbers (5-9-3, 18pts) defeated the Fire 4-2 at JELD-WEN Field in their first meeting April 14. Forward Jorge Perlaza scored his first two goals of the season to help Portland to the thrilling home-opening victory.
The Fire (2-5-12, 18pts) open a two-game week Tuesday as they play host to the New York Red Bulls in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup before welcoming the Timbers to town this weekend. Chicago had an eight-match unbeaten streak come to an end in a 2-1 loss to the LA Galaxy on July 9 at The Home Depot Center.
Portland returns home from Chicago to play host to English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion in an international exhibition match, presented by Verizon Wireless, Wednesday, July 20, at JELD-WEN Field at 8 p.m. (PT).
Watch the Timbers take on the Fire this weekend at Thatcher's Bar & Grill
Fans are invited to join the Timbers' official viewing party Saturday to watch the club take on the Chicago Fire at Thatcher's Bar & Grill, presented by ROOT SPORTS and Budweiser, at 5:30 p.m. (PT). Saturday's viewing party is for fans 21 and older.
Thatcher's Bar & Grill, located at 7906 SE Stark St. in Portland, is one of several local pubs and restaurants featured with the club's pub partner program in 2011. Fans will be able enjoy the match, enter to win tickets to an upcoming game at JELD-WEN Field or autographed items and visit with mascot Timber Joey.
Jack Jewsbury named to 2011 MLS All-Star First XI
Major League Soccer revealed over the weekend that Timbers midfielder and captain Jack Jewsbury was selected to the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star First XI. Click here to read about Jewsbury's first all-star selection.
As part of the First XI, Jewsbury was one of the top vote-getters at the midfield position for the 2011 MLS All-Star squad based upon combined fan voting on three platforms - online at MLSsoccer.com, via text message and Twitter. The online and text voting ballot consisted of six players from each club, as chosen by a panel of media members.
The 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game pits the MLS All-Stars against English Premier League champions Manchester United at Red Bull Arena on Wednesday, July 27, live on ESPN2, Galavisión and TSN at 5:30 p.m. (PT).
Top pick in 2012 Timbers Fan Draft to receive free pair of 2012 season tickets
On Saturday, July 23, the Timbers are holding video auditions at JELD-WEN Field for fans on the club's season ticket waiting list. The fan who demonstrates the most love for Portland, the game of soccer and the Timbers, as determined by a fan vote on Facebook, will win a pair of 2012 Timbers season tickets.
Portland's Jill Dayton nominated for MLS W.O.R.K.S./The Home Depot Community MVP
Portland native Jill Dayton, the Portland-area winner of the MLS W.O.R.K.S./The Home Depot Community MVP contest, is in the running for the league-wide Community MVP contest. Up for grabs is a $10,000 donation given to the winner's charity of choice.
Along with the other nominees from each of the MLS clubs, Jill will represent Portland at the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game on July 27 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., where the MLS W.O.R.K.S./The Home Depot Community MVP will be announced. Jill has selected Guide Dogs for the Blind has her charity.
Timbers see 10th consecutive sellout at JELD-WEN Field
The loud and spirited crowd of 18,627 on hand for the July 10 match against Cascadia rival Seattle Sounders FC was the Timbers' 10th consecutive sellout for a regular-season match at JELD-WEN Field in their inaugural MLS season. Through 10 league matches at home this season, the Timbers have drawn 186,270 fans.
Timbers play host to Special Olympics Cascadia Challenge Series as part of rivalry weekend
As part of the rivalry weekend between the Timbers and Sounders FC, the Timbers played host to a special event at JELD-WEN Field this past Saturday in the inaugural Special Olympics Cascadia Challenge Series.
On July 9, the second leg between the Special Olympics Oregon (SOOR) Timbers and Special Olympics Washington (SOWA) Sounders took place at JELD-WEN Field. By a score of 4-3, the SOOR Timbers claimed victory that day, but the SOWA Sounders took home the bragging rights by virtue of a 9-6 aggregate win in the series. The SOWA Sounders were 6-2 winners over the SOOR Timbers in the first game of the series back in May.
The series featured two Special Olympics teams with affiliations to their home-state MLS clubs, with athletes from the Portland metro area partnering with students from Central Catholic High School. The SOWA Sounders team they faced was a unified team from Seattle Public Schools representing the Sounders. Unified Sports teams are comprised of individuals with intellectual disabilities playing alongside teammates without intellectual disabilities.
Timbers play EPL side West Brom in exhibition match July 20, presented by Verizon Wireless
As part of the club's series of exhibitions in July, the Timbers welcome English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion to JELD-WEN Field on Wednesday, July 20, at 8 p.m., presented by Verizon Wireless.
One of the more historic clubs in England, West Bromwich Albion visits the Rose City as part of their preseason tour to the West Coast as they prepare for the upcoming 2011-12 Premier League season.
Nicknamed "The Baggies," West Bromwich Albion is led by acclaimed head coach Roy Hodgson, who took over at the helm towards the end of last season. Forward Peter Odemwingie was one of the top strikers in the Premier League last season with a career-best 15 goals.

In addition to being one of the Top Plays on ESPN's SportsCenter the evening of July 2, Nagbe's goal was named the MLS Goal of the Week for Week 16 and endured a week on the online SportsCenter Best of the Best poll.
