Red Bull New York News Release
BRIDGEVIEW, IL (July 12, 2011) - The New York Red Bulls dropped a 4-0 decision to the Chicago Fire at TOYOTA Park Tuesday evening in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal match. With the defeat, the Red Bulls were eliminated from the tournament while the Fire advanced to the tournament ¬â¢s semifinals. The Red Bulls, currently in a first place tie in the Eastern Conference in the regular season, return to MLS play on Saturday at The Home Depot Center against CD Chivas USA at 10:30 PM ET (TV: MSG/Galavision; Radio: WADO 1280 AM).
The Fire took an early lead in the seventh minute. A ball was played through by Cristian Nazarit to an onside Dominic Oduro, who raced in alone on net and fired a shot that goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul got a piece on but could not keep out. Chicago searched for a second tally with Oduro hitting just over the crossbar and Patrick Nyarko striking it right at Coundoul later in the half. With 12 minutes left before halftime, Marco Pappa ¬â¢s 25-yard blast was pushed aside by a diving Coundoul.
New York ¬â¢s best chance of the interval came in the 43rd minute, when John Rooney found Mehdi Ballouchy at the top of the 18-yard box. The Red Bulls midfielder cut past his defender to his left foot and rolled an attempt just wide of the right post.
The Fire doubled its lead three minutes into the second half. After a short corner kick, Daniel Paladini swung a cross to the back post that an open Yamith Cuesta rose up to and nodded into the back of the net. Soon after, substitute Orr Barouch made it 3-0, hitting a deflected rebound into the goal from 12 yards out. Barouch completed his two-goal performance in the 69th minute, staying onside, gathering a Diego Chaves feed and placing a left footed blast in.
New York ¬â¢s next home match is on Saturday, July 23, as it battles 2010 MLS Cup Finalist FC Dallas at 6:00 PM ET (TV: MSG, Galavision; Radio: WADO 1280 AM). For tickets, call 1.877.RBSOCCER or log onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.
