Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers today announced that the club signed midfielder Santiago Moreno to a contract extension through the 2026 season with a club option in 2027.
"Santi has become an influential component of our attack since joining Portland as a young player a few years ago. He has taken necessary steps in his maturation on and off the field, which has been vital for his growth," said Timbers General Manager Ned Grabavoy. "Santi has the capability to continue to raise his level, and we're excited to see him become an even more significant contributor with our group moving forward."
The 2024 MLS season will mark Moreno's fourth with the club. Since making his debut for the Timbers on Aug. 29, 2021, the Colombian international has registered 10 goals and 21 assists in 78 appearances (60 starts), tallying more assists and points (41) than any other Timbers player in that span. On Sept. 30, 2023, Moreno became the youngest player in franchise history to record double digit goals and assists for the Timbers at 23 years and 162 days old, surpassing Darlington Nagbe, the previous youngest at 23 years and 288 days old on May 3, 2014.
In the 2023 campaign, Moreno led the team in appearances (31), successful dribbles (59), duels won (163) and assists with nine, a new career best for the 23-year-old attacker. Notably, he notched four game-winning assists last year. In his first full season for the team in 2022, Moreno tallied seven goals and eight assists in 34 appearances (28 starts), leading the team in matches played, points (22), chances created (55) and successful dribbles (75).
At the international level, Moreno has earned two caps for the Colombian National Team. He debuted for the senior squad in a friendly match against Paraguay on Nov. 19, 2022, and made his second appearance in a friendly match against the U.S. Men's National Team on January 28, 2023.
