PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers Academy teams open the 2013-14 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season this weekend, embarking on a two-game road trip to California to face De Anza Force and the Santa Cruz Breakers.
The Timbers Academy face De Anza Force on Saturday at De Anza College in Cupertino, Calif., with the U-18 sides kicking off at 11 a.m. (Pacific), followed by the U-16 teams at 1:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Timbers Academy takes on the Santa Cruz Breakers at Cabrillo College in Aptos, Calif.; the U-18 teams play at 10 a.m. (Pacific), while the U-16 teams square off at 12:30 p.m.
The Timbers Academy teams enter their second season in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and will play a 25-game, regular-season schedule during the 2013-14 campaign, which will run September through June. The Timbers Academy teams will face other MLS academy teams as well as other elite youth clubs from the Northwest and along the West Coast.
Academy forward Anthony Macchione nets key goal in draw for Timbers Reserves Timbers U-18 Academy forward Anthony Macchione (Camas, Wash.) scored the equalizer in the 87th minute to help the Portland Timbers Reserves earn a 1-1 draw against the Real Salt Lake Reserves on Sept. 8 in the MLS Reserve League.
Assisted by fellow Academy player Jacob Kempf (Camas, Wash.), Macchione pulled the trigger on a shot from the top right corner of the penalty area that deflected off Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez and bounced into the net. Click here for a full recap and video highlights.
Timbers Pre-Academy/ODP teams compete in Labor Day Tournament in Washington Two Timbers Pre-Academy/ODP teams competed in the recent Labor Day Cup tournament held in Tukwila, Wash., over Labor Day weekend. The Timbers Pre-Academy '99 and '98 squads posted a combined 3-1-2 record against elite youth club and other pre-academy teams from the region.
The Timbers Pre-Academy '99 team opened the weekend with victories over the Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Colorado Rush '99 sides, scoring a total of five goals in those matches. The team played the Seattle Sounders FC '99 team to a 1-1 draw to round out the tournament.
After a loss to the Kitsap Pumas, the Timbers '98 Pre-Academy team quickly rebounded with a victory over Seattle United Copa and a hard-fought draw against the Seattle Sounders FC '98 team to finish the weekend second in their group.
