Hartford Colonials News Release
EAST HARTFORD, CT - April 12, 2011 - TIM KRUMRIE, a disciple of NFL defensive guru DICK LeBEAU, has been named Hartford Colonials defensive line coach for the 2011 United Football League season.
Krumrie spent 27 years in the National Football League as player and coach. He played his entire 12-year career with the Cincinnati Bengals (1983-94), earning All-Pro First Team and Pro Bowl honors. He has also been a defensive line coach for 15 seasons with the Bengals (1995-2002), Buffalo Bills (2003-05) and Kansas City Chiefs (2006-2009).
"There are three great pro defensive line coaches, and we just got one of them," Colonials head coach and general manager JERRY GLANVILLE said. "He teaches technique with hustle, hit and chase. I interviewed him about the different things we do. He knew it all. In fact, he has played it all and taught it all. Tim is a real plus for Hartford."
Krumrie coached NFL All-Pro defensive linemen Jared Allen and Aaron Schobel. Playing for the Chiefs, Allen led the NFL with 15.5 sacks in 2007 and earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors for the first time that season. Schobel averaged more than 10 sacks during Krumrie's three seasons with Buffalo.
A 10th-round draft pick by the Bengals in 1983 out of Wisconsin, Krumrie was named to the 1988 All-Pro First Team in helping Cincinnati win the AFC Championship and earn a trip to Super Bowl XXIII against San Francisco 49ers. He was also a two-time Pro Bowl selection (1987-88).
"The way I played is exactly the way I coach - 100 mph non-stop," Krumrie said. "I expect the players to be a non-stop motor. No matter what the situation is, I expect you to chase and run and make that play no matter where you are on the football field. The players have to be in great shape and have tremendous mental toughness and play aggressive."
Krumrie played in 188 career games (161 starts), registering 1,008 tackles and 34 1/2 sacks. He had 13 fumble recoveries.
"My whole attitude was technique and leverage and just outwork everybody. That's how I survived," said Krumrie, a 270-pound nose tackle.
Krumrie learned under the tutelage of LeBeau, the former Bengals defensive coordinator who is widely regarded as the greatest defensive mind in football. Krumrie and LeBeau were on the same coaching staffs in Cincinnati, from 1997-2002, and Buffalo in 2003 before LeBeau became Steelers defensive coordinator in 2004.
Krumrie, a native of Mondovi, WI., is the second former NFL All-Pro player to join Coach Glanville's staff. HAROLD JACKSON, an All-Pro receiver with the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams in the 1970s, was named Colonials wide receivers coach April 11. Collectively, Krumrie and Jackson have played 396 games and 28 seasons in the NFL.
The UFL begins its third season in August as the Colonials play an eight-game schedule against teams from Las Vegas, Omaha, Sacramento and Virginia. The 2011 schedule will be announced in the coming weeks. Fans can register for tickets for the 2011 Colonials season at www.HartfordColonials.com.
