Hamilton Tiger-Cat fans love hard-nosed, defensive football. Their latest signing brings the WOW factor to training camp. Middle linebacker Andre McNeal, is a graduate of the University of Virginia, who then went to NFL Europe. He spent last season in the training camp of the Ottawa Renegades, where he drew the attention of everyone, by hitting everyone in sight. That, at times, drew the ire of the coaching staff.
"He's a legitimate freak of nature," said Tiger-Cat defensive front and linebacker coach Dennis McPhee. He's agile, mobile and hostile. That hostility got him in some trouble in Ottawa last year. He was having problems differentiating between practice and game day situations. Kavis Reed (defensive co-ordinator) wants a bunch of guys that can run around and hit people, and we think Andre fits that mode."
The 26 year-old McNeal is a 6-foot-1, 205 pound native of Miami, Florida, who smiled when asked about the controversy in Ottawa last season. "I love hitting everything in sight on the field," he said. "I want to open peoples eyes, when they watch me play football."
He may have learned the aggressive approach from his father, who was his high-school coach. But, he does have a softer side as well. And that comes from his step-father, who is a minister.
McNeal will vie for a spot on the roster, when training camp opens May 22.
