National Officiating Conference Charts Development Agenda

Toronto, Ontario â The Canadian Football League announced today the launch of a national and on-going effort designed to further enhance the state of football officiating in Canada. Launched as a result of industry discussions at the recent Officiating Symposium in Winnipeg in mid-March, the Canadian Football League has agreed to play a strong role in architecting the necessary programs to attract new officials and to provide the very best in training and development.
CFL Commissioner Tom Wright endorsed the program noting, "Our League is a primary benefactor of any programs that will advance the caliber of officiating in Canada. Our agreement to engage in and provide leadership to the program underscores the importance the CFL places in strengthening the game at all levels. We will devote the necessary time, human and financial resources required to ensure that this industry group is successful in achieving its goals."
The CFL will provide leadership to a group comprised of senior officials from amateur officiating associations, Football Canada, Canadian Football Officials Association, the Canadian Junior Football League and College officiating. In the group's first meeting there was a clear consensus that with the growing popularity and expansion of football programs in Canada, the necessary growth of a roster of trained and skilled officials would be a joint responsibility of all of the participating Leagues and national and provincial governing bodies.
On the agenda for further review, the Winnipeg meeting endorsed the addition of officiating as part of the curriculum for high school football players. This practice has been successful in Quebec, where it was introduced as a pilot project, and is now being considered for expansion by the Ministry of Education. The members of the Symposium also agreed to collaborate on marketing programs designed to attract former and graduating players to the ranks of Canadian football officials.
