CFL announces new Director of Officiating

Toronto, Ontario – The Canadian Football League announced today the appointment of George Black as the CFL's new Director of Officiating.

George Black has been associated with the League for 22 seasons as a CFL field official, working more than 400 games, including six Grey Cup championships. Following the 2000 season, Black retired from his on field responsibilities and moved into an officiating supervisor and evaluator role, which he has held for the past three seasons. Black recently retired after 32 years as both an educator and principal with the Toronto District School Board.

"I'm delighted to take on this significant responsibility," said George Black. "My goal is to build upon the previous standard and see even better officiating for the players, the teams and the fans of the CFL."

"As we continue to focus on the development of this critical function within our game, we are pleased to welcome Mr. Black as the new Director of Officiating," said Ed Chalupka, Vice President of Football Operations, CFL. "With more than twenty seasons as a CFL official, and close to 15 years at the amateur level, Mr. Black brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our League. His passion for Canada's game and his commitment to ensuring excellence in officiating will prove to be a valuable asset to the CFL."

Black will assume his responsibilities within the Football Operations department of the League office beginning Tuesday, April 13, 2004 and will be based out of Toronto.
