Lancaster Stormers News Release

Terry Tiffee jolted three homers to right and right center Wednesday evening, pacing the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 6-5 victory over the Somerset Patriots at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

With the win, the Barnstormers moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Somerset in the Freedom Division standings. Sugar Land trails by two.

Tiffee's first home run followed a Tommy Everidge walk in the bottom of the first and gave the Barnstormers a quick 2-0 lead. He connected again with one out and the bases empty in the third. His third blast, a towering drive to right center, led off the fifth. All three were drilled off Somerset starter Mike MacDonald (1-1).

Adam Godwin contributed an RBI triple to score Emerson Frostad with two outs in the second as Lancaster grabbed a 3-0 lead.

Somerset escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the third and built a rally off that. Freddie Bynum bunted for a base hit to open the inning. Freddy Sandoval followed with a two-hopper to third, and Bynum beat the force play throw to second. Following a strikeout of Jesse Hoorelbeke, the pair executed a double steal.

Jeff Nettles followed with a single flared to right center. Bynum scored easily, and Sandoval barely beat Fehlandt Lentini's strong throw home, a call which led to manager Butch Hobson's first ejection of the season.

The Patriots cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth. Adam Donachie lined a ground rule double to right center to start the inning and scored on Dan DeGeorge's two-base hit into the left field corner. Rich Rundles (2-1) was able to hold his ground, freezing DeGeorge at third with the tying run as the inning ended.

Tiffee's leadoff blast stretched the lead to 5-3, and Blake Gailen slammed another homer two batters later for the three-run cushion.

Nettles cut the edge to 6-4 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Hoorelbeke got to Tim Hamulack for a leadoff jolt in the ninth before the lefty settled down to earn his seventh save of the year.

Lancaster hosts Somerset in a doubleheader at 5:00 on Thursday evening. The Barnstormers will send Alan Johnson (2-3) to the mound in the opener against Justin Cassel (1-3). Mark Brackman (1-2) takes the hill in the second game with lefty Roy Merritt (2-0) getting the start for the Patriots.

The broadcast will begin at 5:00 on 1600-AM, WPDC and on shoutcast.com. WLAN, 1390-AM, 1390wlan.com and the I Heart Radio cell phone app will pick up the doubleheader in progress, beginning at 6:00.

NOTES: Bryant Nelson is the only other Barnstormer to have homered three times in one game...He accomplished the feat on September 4, 2010 against Camden...Gailen's homer was the first of his four to come at Clipper Magazine Stadium...Reliever Beau Vaughan, who threw the seventh, posted his seventh straight scoreless appearance...The six runs was the most that Lancaster has scored in a game behind Rundles...Mac Donald tied a record by yielding four homers to the Barnstormers in one game.
